A Vintage Winter Tree

How tall is your tree?
My tree is 9 feet tall. I love tall flocked trees!

What mix of ornaments did you use for this tree?
I think the mixture of textures is what makes a tree truly spectacular, and I have a specific way that I layer mine. I began by sticking in my berry and sparkly stick picks all around my tree. Then I added all of my big vintage postcard images and my biggest glass ornaments (mostly mercury glass, my favorite), followed by the smaller ones until the tree was nice and full. Then I added my pinecones and other non-glass ornaments. Lastly, I put my ribbon on the tree. A lot of people put their ribbon on first, but I find that if you put the ribbon on last, you will not fight with it as much and it looks much better.

How many ornaments did you use to achieve this look?
About 60, I would guess.

How much garland/ribbon did it take to cover the tree?
I used 30 yards for this particular tree because I tied them in bows, which generally takes more than typical draping.

How did you decide on the decorating theme of your tree?
I have special memories of a friend’s home when I was little, and her mom always had the most gorgeous vintage trees with beautiful German glass glitter and mercury glass ornaments. I always knew that I would have that look in my home someday.

Is there a story on a signature ornament you’d like to share with us?
There is a funny story, but it isn’t with an ornament. You can probably see a paper ribbon garland in the tree that has music and script on it. I needed something like that to add a little warmth and interest, and the only thing I could find that I loved was actually wrapping paper. I cut the paper into six-inch wide strips, and glued wire and backing onto it to make it into my own little paper wired ribbon. I guess if you can’t find it, just make it!

Is there something different you did for this tree that you particularly like?
I think the big vintage postcard reproductions are pretty unique, and I love them. They add so much charm and interest to the tree. And because the tree is so big, they are not overwhelming at all.
