Star Light, Star Bright
How tall is your tree?
Every year, we have a tree from floor to ceiling, a little over 8 feet.
What mix of ornaments did you use for this tree?
I always start out with the lighting and start from the inside of the tree going up and then out. I use two types of lighting strands. The regular clear bulbs and some pearl light strands, which are definitely my favorite because they give the tree a really warm glow. I use mostly balls for the entire tree in various sizes, from very large to pretty small. The largest balls on the bottom and more in the inside of the tree branches, and the smaller ones on the tips of the branches so the weight doesn’t drag them down. I’m sure you are asking why I mostly use balls. Well, it’s because they are my favorite. I’m not a huge fan of using ribbon, flowers, and other ornaments.
For this tree I have mostly monochromatic balls ranging from white to cream and gold tones, but there are also some silver and white striped balls and glitter balls in there. My favorite balls to use are clear glass Christmas balls because they reflect the light so beautifully. I did mix in some clear glass icicles and some gold wood twig balls that I stick over certain light strands more in the inside of the tree.
I cut all the large stars on white cardboard and hung them with simple Christmas ornament hooks. They make a big graphic statement on the tree. I really love them and the tree wouldn’t look the same without them.
How many ornaments did you use to achieve that look?
That is such a tough question, but I know that our entire living room was covered in bags and boxes when we started. There are easily over 100 balls on this tree.
How did you decide on the decorating theme of your tree?
It just evolved from ornaments that I had already and collected over the years.
Is there a story on a signature ornament you’d like to share with us?
I do have a special ornament for every year with our Christmas photo in it, but they go on our fun family tree in our family room, which the kids get to decorate with ornaments they made and fun lights. It’s pretty much their tree and there aren’t any rules.
Is there something different you did for this tree that you particularly like?
The new thing for this tree was definitely the craft cardboard stars that I made myself. And I love them.
