Drops of Silver and Gold

This year, Brad took some time to help us decorate the home of Train’s lead vocalist, Pat Monahan. A multi-platinum record selling band, Train is known for the Grammy award-winning songs “Hey, Soul Sister” and “Drops of Jupiter.”

Here are some of Brad’s thoughts on how he decorated Pat’s Christmas tree.

How tall is this tree? And what type of Balsam Hill tree is it?
It was a 9-ft Aspen Estate Fir tree.

Which of its features did you like the most?
I love the realism. It was easy to shape and the color was beautiful.

What mix of ornaments did you use for this tree?
The style of the ornaments was the Silver and Gold mixture. It went with the palette of the house, and was warm and inviting.

Are there any special decorating techniques on this tree that you’d like to share?
I like to wire several picks together and make a chunk-like focal point on each section of the tree. Also, I love toppers. Grouping together ribbons makes a statement at the top and in any type of tree topper, you can just let individual ribbons fall around the ribbon cluster or angel. I used croissant rolls and put a knot at the end of each ribbon to really give a beautiful look of interest. Always be creative with the ribbon and make sure it gives depth to the tree.

How did you decide on the look for Pat’s home?
The ribbon was important for embellishing all the mantels and little areas around the house especially the banister, keeping things in uniform. I made sure everything was full and exciting yet didn’t lose the shape of the tree, and made it very enchanting with lots of lights. I used clusters of ornaments in special areas of the house that enhanced photos of family members.
